When I originate a kit with The Crewel Work Company, I am using photographs of the original item to be stitched and selecting the wool colors, the stitches, and doing any necessary edits to the design. Usually, I have been able to go with Phillipa to see the piece in the ‘wild’. These adventures always inform the process and make the experience that much richer. Sometimes part of this process is determining how best to approach the project. With the Muncaster Bedhanging, I quickly determined that it was necessary to use a custom-made slate frame.  Working with Carrie Roberts at Ecclesiastical Sewing (www.ecclesiasticalsewing.com) was a delight.  She quickly helped me to develop one.  Should you wish to purchase a large, custom slate frame for one of the larger projects, her frames are excellent and so is her customer service.

With The Muncaster Bedhanging, I have spent a lot of time with Phillipa at Muncaster Castle.  I have crawled up and down spiral staircases to and from the attics, I have unpacked chests and bureaus, and I have laughed and marveled with the delightful Duff-Pennington family.
